Mosquito Repelling Plants Available in the Nursery

Spending time outside is the best part about summer, but battling the mosquitos… not so much fun. Planting certain herbs can help repel those flying nuisances without the use of harsh chemicals. Here are few that are currently available in the nursery:

๐˜ผ๐™ก๐™ก๐™ž๐™ช๐™ข๐™จ (otherwise known as onions, garlic, leeks and chives) keep the buzzing at bay and also repel Japanese beetles. Try Chives, or the potent and delicious Garlic Chives.

๐˜ฝ๐™–๐™จ๐™ž๐™ก will repels mosquitoes, thrips, and flies. Holy and Lemon basils are especially recommended for repelling mosquitoes. Holy basil also makes an excellent tea.

๐™ˆ๐™–๐™ง๐™ž๐™œ๐™ค๐™ก๐™™๐™จ are known as effective repellants to rabbits, flies, and mosquitoes, and are toxic to nematodes (soil pests that feed on roots). They also attract beneficial insects like lacewings, ladybugs, and parasitic wasps. Double duty!

๐™‡๐™–๐™ซ๐™š๐™ฃ๐™™๐™š๐™ง fragrance is a heady and intoxicating delight, unless you are a mosquito, and then it is a “keep away” sign. Grow this drought-tolerant perennial near outdoor gathering areas to enjoy this beautiful shrub, sans mosquitoes. Lavender also attracts pollinators along with beneficial insects like hover flies.

๐™๐™ค๐™จ๐™š๐™ข๐™–๐™ง๐™ฎ is a culinary delight, but it is despised by mosquitoes and many garden pests like cabbage moths, bean beetles, and carrot flies.

๐™๐™๐™ฎ๐™ข๐™š repels cabbage loopers, cabbage worms, and cabbage moths, as well as mosquitoes. This woody, perennial herb has many culinary uses and its flowers are a favorite of bees. Thyme oil is a natural, proven miticide used by beekeepers to keep hives healthy and varroa-mite free.

“Miss Kim” Lilac Now Blooming in the Nursery

Beautiful and fragrant “Miss Kim” Lilac blooming in the nursery. Always reminiscent of our Grandmother’s lilacs. “Miss Kim” is a tree form Lilac with compact blooms. Purple buds reveal clusters of highly fragrant, lavender-blue flowers. Foliage is burgundy-tinged in fall. Generally resists powdery mildew. Slow growing reaching a height of approximately 6 to 8 feet. Great for border accent or mass planting. Available now.

Our Beautiful Spring Blooming Trees Are Budding!

Two of our beautiful Spring blooming trees, just starting to bud. The Weeping Pink Cherry is a striking ornamental, suited as a focal point due to their delicate, arched branches that create a chandelier or fountain shape. Pale pink blossoms cascade down in spring. In summer, glossy green leaves emerge, which give way to golden tones in fall. When mature and in bloom they are STUNNING! In the winter the cascading shape lends interest to the garden. Likes the sun and attracts a variety of song birds. Mature height/width is generally 15 to 25 feet.

The Rising Sun Redbud is a beauty that boasts lovely lavender color flowers in the Spring, which gives way to colorful foliage throughout the growing season. Foliage boasts of lime green, yellow, orange and reddish orange all at the same time. Likes full to part sun, heat-tolerant, height/width is generally 10 to 15 feet.

Both are available in the nursery, along with many other trees and shrubs. It’s time to plant ๐Ÿ™‚

Strawberry Plants Have Arrived in Our Nursery

Strawberry plants have arrived ๐Ÿ“! These are June bearing strawberries and should be planted now or early April. Plant 18โ€ apart in soil with compost mixed in; be sure not to bury the crown. 8 hours of sun is best. Be sure to feed with slow release fertilizer. Don’t overwater, strawberry plants do not like โ˜น๏ธ wet feet. Then sit back and enjoy your bounty!
